Education, health and care – a more coordinated approach

We want to make sure young people who have a learning or physical disability are supported across all the different areas of their lives. That means services must work together more closely than in the past.

One example of this is the new education, health and care plan, or EHCP.

Until recently, if a young person had a learning or physical disability they had a document called a ‘statement of educational need’, laying out how their education should be tailored or adjusted to support them.

From now on, they will have an education health and care plan and a more integrated, person-centred assessment focusing on what they want and need.

Since September all children with a learning or physical disability who have newly entered education have been given the new type of plan. And from now on, those who already have the original statement of educational need will move to an education health and care plan instead.
